USTA/Southeast Michigan

2018 USTA League Tennis Championship Rules

  1. USTA Rules, USTA League Tennis Regulations and “The Code” will be observed. Roving officials will be present to oversee all aspects of play.

  1. Team Captains must report to the Tournament Desk at least 30 minutes prior to your first match. At this time, you will provide a contact phone number, be asked to confirm that you will be fielding every position for all your scheduled matches, receive your lineup cards and local flight awards.

  1. Team Lineups for each match must be submitted to the Tournament Desk 30 minutes prior to the scheduled match time (this includes the first scheduled matches of each day).

  1. All team members on the line-up card must be on site and ready to play when the line-up card is presented to the Tournament Desk. Matches will be put on early if courts are available.

  1. All teams are expected to field all positions for all matches. Should a rare instance occur and a team is short players, the following will apply:

  1. Team Captain notifies SEM (in writing) 24 hours before playoffs begin that they will be short
    • Team pays the same entry fee
    • Team must default #3 doubles
    • Opposing teams will be notified of the defaulted position

  1. Team Captain informs SEM less than 24 hours before playoffs begin (or on site) that they will be short
    • Team pays the same entry fee
    • Team must default #3 doubles
    • Opposing team will be notified of the defaulted position
    • If the opposing team has turned in a line-up, the captain will be allowed to make adjustments (opposing team will not have access to the defaulting team’s line-up)

  1. Teams that have a Line Default (line-up turned in and courts being called to play before default is apparent [i.e. no-show, lateness, etc.])
    • Team pays the same entry fee
    • The position of the “missing” player is the defaulted court
    • After playoffs, the SE Michigan League Committee will review each occurrence to determine any penalties, including suspension of Captain, Player or Team.

  1. If the lineup is not received 30 minutes prior to the scheduled time, a tournament official will be called for a team penalty as follows:
    1. 1 to 5 minutes late – loss of toss and one game for ALL courts
    2. 6 to 10 minutes late – loss of toss and two games for ALL courts
    3. 11 to 15 minutes late – loss of toss and three games for ALL courts
    4. 16 minutes or more late – default of entire team match

  1. Order of strength is encouraged, but not required.

  1. The use of cell phones and/or electronic devices during matches is strictly prohibited. Players in violation will be subject to penalties and/or disqualification.

  1. All players must bring a photo ID; random identification checks may be made.

  1. Unfortunately, scheduling accommodations or additional rest periods will not be granted to players who choose to participate on multiple teams at the Championships.

  1. Team entry fees for all matches are due in full at check-in.

  1. Prior to the start of the day’s matches, any warm up in an indoor facility is at the discretion of the club, and (if allowed) must be paid to the club. All courts must be cleared no later than 30 minutes prior to the first scheduled matches of the day.

  1. NO WARM UP on empty courts after play has begun for the day.

  1. When matches are assigned to their court, a warm up of 10 minutes is permitted. This time includes serves.

  1. Matches will be the best of 3 sets, regular scoring, with a match tiebreak played in lieu of a third set. The match tiebreak is first to 10 by 2, the set tiebreak is first to 7 by 2. A two-minute set break is available after both the first and second set but NO COACHING is allowed. Coman Tiebreak Procedures will be used for both set and match tiebreakers.

  1. After the match, all players must return to the desk to report scores and return the used balls. To eliminate scoring discrepancies, at least 1 player from each doubles team should report scores. Captains must sign the completed scorecard within 15 minutes of the completion of the final individual match of the team match.  Failure to sign the scorecard within the 15-minute time frame indicates agreement to the scores as reported to the Tournament Desk.

  1. In divisions with one flight, the team winning the most team matches will be named the Champion. Ties within single flights will be broken using the following criteria: 1) the team with the most individual match wins, 2) the team winning the head-to-head match, 3) the team losing the fewest sets, 4) the team losing the fewest games, 5) coin toss by the League Coordinator or Site Director.

  1. In divisions with more than one flight, a combination of round robins and single elimination will be used.

  1. If a team defaults an entire team match for any reason during round robin play, all matches played or to be played by that team shall be null and void and will have no impact on the outcome of the standings within the flight. This team will play no further matches at the Championships. Any team that defaults individual courts or an entire team match will not be reimbursed for any match fees.

  1. Any team committing a total team default at the Playoffs is subject to further sanctions for the 2019 season. All players on the roster who were eligible to participate at Playoffs will be subject to sanctions by the Southeast Michigan USTA League Tennis Committee.

On behalf of our Tournament Staff, have fun and good luck!

And please remember: The people you play today are your opponents,

They are not your enemies!
