Patterson, Pearson and Malpass Highlight USTA/Midwest Award Winners

Mel Bergman Award Recipient – Tom Patterson

Tom Patterson from Chicago, Illinois, has provided a tremendous impact on tennis at all levels including the District, Section, and national levels.  He served for more than ten years on the Chicago District Tennis Association (CDTA) Board, including President in 1997 and 1998.  Patterson also served more than 15 years on the Chicago Tennis Patrons Board, including President in 2001 and 2002.

At the USTA/Midwest Section level, Patterson has served as a volunteer for 25 years.  He is currently a member of the USTA/Midwest Section Tennis Innovations Committee and chairs the Committee Appointment Process Task Force.  Previously, Patterson chaired the Volunteer Leadership Committee from 2008-2013, and was a member of the Communications Committee and Membership Committee.

At the USTA national level, Patterson was a member of the Membership Committee and Awards Committee for several years.  In addition to his volunteer role, Patterson is a USTA certified tennis official who has trained other officials in the Chicago area for many years, and he has served as an umpire in various tennis venues including the US Open and World Team Tennis.  Patterson received the USTA/Midwest Section Frank Dowling Award in 1990 for his dedication and contributions as a tennis official throughout the Midwest.     


Malpass

Family of the Year Award Recipient – Tad Malpass Family

The Tad and Brenda Malpass Family from East Jordan, Michigan, have supported tennis in the East Jordan community for many years.  In fact, they met through tennis and even had their first date on the tennis court back in 1985.  Both Tad and Brenda are still active players, along with their two daughters Kirsten and Keegan.  The family plays together at Bay Tennis & Fitness in Harbor Spring Mich.  Tad and Brenda have been active supporters of their daughters’ junior tennis careers over the years, including supporting tennis fundraisers for the East Jordan High School Girls tennis team. 

Daughter Kirsten is a sophomore at Lake State University in Sault St. Marie, Mich., where she is a member of the tennis team.  She grew up playing junior tennis and competed for the Northern Michigan Tennis Association (NMTA) on its Team Cup as a junior player.  Kirsten was the driving force that led to the formation of a girl’s tennis team at East Jordan High School.  She continues to share her passion for the sport by volunteering her time to help introduce youth in her community to the game.

Daughter Keegan is a junior at East Jordan High School where she plays No. 1 singles for the girls’ high school team.  She plays junior tournaments and represents the Northern Michigan Tennis Association (NMTA) on its Team Cup.


Stan Malless Award Recipient – John Pearson

John Pearson from Indianapolis, Indiana, has a great passion for tennis, particularly at the grass roots level and has been an active volunteer in the Central Indiana Tennis Association (CITA) for many years.  He was a member of the first group of instructors for the National Junior Tennis & Learning (NJTL) program in Indianapolis at the Riverside Park location, and continued to support for years in various ways.  Pearson received the CITA Stan Malless Award in 2014 for his volunteer efforts at the District level. 

Pearson has coordinated and sponsored the Pearson Ford tennis tournament for more than 20 years.  The tournament has grown in participation and prize money over the years.  Recently, the Pearson Ford tournament has attracted former top ranked ATP players Robby Ginepri and Amer Delic.

Pearson is one of the leaders responsible for gathering support to construct the new Pearson Automotive Tennis Club in the Indianapolis suburb of Zionsville.  The facility is expected to open sometime in 2017 and will offer eight regulation size climate-controlled tennis courts, a guest lounge and viewing platform, men’s and women’s locker rooms, online registration and court reservation, and skilled, professional instructors from Team Witsken who will offer lessons, clinics, leagues and tournaments.
